“For the Next Time I Can’t Speak”

By Emily Mills ( 12/15/05)

tonight
I can’t look at you enough—
every revolution
around that great nuclear reactor
will be marked
by my thorough examination
of your body.
If I had to choose
how to
burn my eyes (romantic and random choice)
the sun could not hold a candle
to the light
that pours out of you
when you’re next to me between sheets of air or
what ever—
bright hot
and pulling all my breath from my bones
just to push it back in
with lips and fingers
and I could never make words well enough to
sum you up
or dress you down
but I will try with skin and muscle
tonight and every one to come.
